Is July a good time to visit Romania? 

July is an excellent time to experience Romania, thanks to its summer weather that’s perfect for exploring both cities and nature. Days are generally sunny and bright, with brief afternoon thunderstorms keeping the countryside lush. Rainfall averages 70-80mm, typically falling in short, intense bursts rather than long stretches.

With clear skies and warm temperatures, you can easily plan city tours or outdoor adventures. Just aim to start early in the day to avoid the midday heat.

Average daily temperatures in July

In July, you're looking at daytime highs averaging around 82°F (28°C), though temperatures can occasionally spike into the low 90s°F (32-34°C), especially in Bucharest and other urban areas. These temperatures are among the warmest you'll experience in Romania all year. During the day, you'll find it's pleasantly warm and perfect for exploring, though you might want to take a break during the hottest afternoon hours. Nights cool down to a comfortable 57°F (14°C).

If you're planning to visit the Black Sea coast, you're in luck – water temperatures hover around a pleasant 75°F (24°C), ideal for swimming and beach activities. You'll also benefit from long summer days, with roughly 15 hours of daylight giving you plenty of time to pack your schedule.

What about the crowd and cost?

There’s more to a July visit than just the weather.

You'll be traveling during peak season, which means you'll definitely notice the crowds, especially at popular sights like Bran Castle and the Black Sea resorts. Prices are at their highest – expect to pay premium rates for accommodations and activities.

If you’d rather avoid the crowds, you might want to consider visiting in late May or early September. You'll find similar warm, pleasant weather but with notably fewer tourists and better deals on everything from hotels to tours. Beach vacation at Black Sea resorts like Mamaia

You'll find your slice of paradise at Mamaia. Stretching over 4.3 miles (7 km) of soft, sandy shore, it’s a paradise in July with daytime temperatures averaging 82°F (28°C). The calm, shallow waters are ideal for swimming, especially if you're traveling with kids. By night, Mamaia transforms into a lively hotspot with beachfront clubs, restaurants, and bars. Try kitesurfing, jet-skiing, or simply relax with a cold local beer and fresh seafood at a beachside bar.

Transfăgărășan Highway (one of the world's most scenic roads)

Get ready for what Top Gear called "the best road in the world." The Transfăgărășan is a 56-mile (90 km) engineering marvel that winds through the Carpathian Mountains, treating you to hairpin turns and breathtaking vistas. July is one of the few months when the road is fully open, offering perfect visibility of the dramatic landscapes. You'll climb to heights of 2,042 meters, passing through tunnels carved into the mountain and by pristine alpine lakes. 

Take night tours of Bran Castle (Dracula's Castle)

Welcome to Romania's answer to Tuscany! The Dealu Mare wine region, just an hour from Bucharest, is at its most beautiful in July when the vineyards are lush and green. You'll find over 12,000 hectares of vineyards producing excellent reds, particularly from Fetească Neagră grapes. Most wineries offer guided tours where you can learn about the winemaking process, explore centuries-old cellars, and enjoy tastings paired with local cheeses and charcuterie. The region's mild microclimate and rolling hills create perfect conditions for both wine growing and scenic drives between estates.

Hike to Bâlea Lake via the trail from Bâlea Waterfall

This stunning alpine hike offers one of Romania's most rewarding day treks. Starting at the impressive 197-foot (60-meter) Bâlea Waterfall, you'll climb through the Făgăraș Mountains to reach the glacier lake at 6,673 feet (2,034 meters). The trail takes about 2-3 hours one way, offering spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. You'll pass through meadows filled with wildflowers unique to the Carpathians. Pack layers though - even in July, temperatures at the lake can be surprisingly cool.
