Mount Bromo

The main attraction of Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park is a visit to the rim of Mount Bromo's smouldering crater at sunrise. Mount Bromo is an ancient caldera 10km (6 miles) across, with four smaller peaks rising in the centre, ranging between 300 and 400 metres (1,000–1,300ft). Surrounding these peaks on the crater floor is sand and lush vegetation; every few years cinder and ash pour forth in eruptions to carpet the countryside with nutrient-rich deposits.

7 Tips for Climbing Mount Bromo

Climbing Mount Bromo is an incredible adventure that attracts thousands of tourists from all around the world. Located in East Java, Mount Bromo is an active volcano and is considered one of the most beautiful destinations in Indonesia. The journey to the summit is a challenging but rewarding experience that will leave you with unforgettable memories.

Do you want to climb this volcano? Make sure to read our tips.

#1 Overview of the trek

There are two ways to take in the view: either from the crater’s edge or a panorama of the entire caldera from afar (if time permits, watch the sunrise from both vistas). All arrangements need to be made the night before.

Both walks can be done in the pre-dawn period; if time is limited, enjoy sunrise at Mount Penanjakan and after breakfast take a pony ride for the view of Bromo’s navel.

#2 Best trekking routes and duration

There are two popular climbs up Mount Bromo.

From Cemara Lawang

For the first, start from Cemara Lawang at 2–3am to catch an incredible sunrise at the peak. Make the trek across the sandsea floor, either by pony or by foot, and once at the base of the crater, climb up an incline of 250 steps.

At the top is a narrow lip from where you can look into the belly of the belching sulphurous centre of the crater and take in the 360-degree view of the entire caldera and the majestic Mount Semeru.

From Mount Penanjakan

For the panoramic view, hire a jeep to Mount Penanjakan, 400 metres above Mount Bromo and about 3km (2 miles) to the west; then it is a short hike along a paved road to the summit. The view here is spectacular.

#3 What about Mount Bromo trekking difficulty

Climbing Mount Bromo is considered to be moderately difficult, but it largely depends on the route you choose and your level of fitness. The most popular route to the summit is via the steep staircase that leads to the edge of the crater, which can be physically demanding, especially for those who are not used to high-altitude trekking.

The climb usually takes around two hours and involves hiking on a rocky and uneven terrain. However, there are options to ride a horse or take a jeep for part of the way to make it easier. It is recommended that you are in good physical condition and take the necessary precautions to prevent altitude sickness, especially if they are not used to high altitudes.

Despite the challenges, the stunning views from the top of Mount Bromo make it all worthwhile.

There are several ways to reach Mount Bromo in the Tengger highlands. Transport is also easily arranged in Surabaya, Malang, or even Bali.

#6 The best time to climb Mount Bromo

The best time to visit Mount Bromo is June to October, during the dry season. Every year thousands of Hindu Tenggerese participate in a midnight procession to toss offerings into Mount Bromo’s caldera in a festival called Kasodo (14th day of the Kasada Month in the traditional Tenggerese calendar; usually June or July).

Their offerings to the spirits of Mount Bromo are meant to assure blessings for the coming year.

#7 Where to stay when in the area?

There is modest accommodation in both Ngadisari and Cemara Lawang (closer to the rim), and the better rooms come with hot water.

Ngadisari

Ngadisari has a good selection of mid-range guesthouses and cheap homestays.

Cemara Lawang

Similarly, Cemara Lawang has plenty of midrange hotels to stay, nearly all of which have amazing views.
