The climate in Honduras, and therefore the best time to visit, is generally dictated by altitude. In the central highlands, the weather is pleasantly warm in the daytime and cool at night. The hot Pacific and Caribbean coasts offer the relief of breezes and cooling rain showers, while San Pedro Sula and other lowland towns can be positively scorching in summer.
Honduras’s rainy season, “winter” (invierno), runs from May to November (most markedly June and July). In much of the country it rains for only a few hours in the afternoon, though along the northern coast and in Mosquitia rain is possible year-round. October and November are the only months you might want to avoid in these parts: in the middle of the hurricane season (generally said to begin in August), this is when you’re most likely to be affected by storms.
Honduras’s calendar is full of festivals, featuring everything from small local events to major national parties. The following are just a few highlights.
January 25–February 4 Pilgrims flock to Tegucigalpa to worship and celebrate the Virgen de Suyapa.
March–April Semana Santa (Easter) is a major celebration throughout Honduras, with many of the cities hosting sizeable parades.
April 6–12 Punta Gorda celebrates the arrival of the Garífuna.
May La Feria de San Isidro or Carnaval in La Ceiba, during the week leading up to the third Saturday. Festivities culminate in a street parade through the city centre, followed by live music until the early morning.
June 29 San Pedro Sula holiday.
