10 days in Chile Itinerary

Chile stretches over 2,670 miles (4,300 kilometers) along South America's western edge, making it home to the world's driest desert, ancient glaciers, and everything in between. In just 10 days, you’ll experience Chile’s three most iconic landscapes: the bustling Central Valley, the wild beauty of Patagonia, and the surreal landscape of the Atacama Desert. Here’s my guide to what I think makes for the perfect Chile itinerary for 10 days.

Day 1: Arrive in Santiago de Chile

Santiago lies in a valley surrounded by the snow-capped Andes, with stunning city views from almost every corner. This is the perfect place to begin your trip to Chile.

For lunch, head to the Central Market, a lively hub for fresh seafood where you can sample a classic authentic ceviche. If you're after something more local, La Vega Central is another great market where you can experience the bustling daily life of Santiago's residents. In the afternoon, make your way to San Cristóbal Hill for views of the city and the Andes mountains. The funicular ride is a charming way to ascend, especially at sunset.

Where to stay in Santiago de Chile

For your first night of this Chile itinerary for 10 days, you'll find yourself in Santiago, which has a lot of great neighborhoods to choose from.

  • Centro Histórico: The historic center, full of vibrant plazas and iconic landmarks, like the Cathedral of Santiago, is ideal for those looking to be in the heart of the action. This tends to be where I stay most of the time.
  • Providencia: A bustling, modern area with tree-lined streets, excellent dining options, and a lively nightlife scene.
  • Las Condes: Known for its upscale feel, offering luxury shopping, fine dining, and proximity to ski resorts.
  • Bellavista: A colorful and artsy neighborhood, great for those who want to experience Santiago's creative side with its lively street art and nightlife.

Day 2: Day trip to Valparaíso

Travel time: 1.5 hours by bus (buses depart every 15 minutes) or by car from Santiago.

Valparaíso is everything I love about Chile—vibrant, artistic, and a little bit chaotic. Known as the "Jewel of the Pacific," Valparaiso is famous for its vibrant street art, quirky architecture, and colorful houses clinging to the hills. This UNESCO World Heritage site is brimming with history and charm and visiting here is one of the best things to do in Chile.

What to do in Valparaíso

The best way to explore is to by hopping on one of the historic funiculars, or ascensores, and be ready with coins to enjoy the ride.

If you can, join a free walking tour from Plaza Sotomayor—it's a great introduction to the area's street art and history. For lunch, don't miss chorrillana, a deliciously indulgent dish of fries, meat, and eggs. For views, be sure head to Paseo Yugoslavo and Cerro Alegre.

Day 3: Travel from Santiago to Punta Arenas

Travel time: the flight is approximately 3.5 hours.

As your Chile itinerary for 10 days continues, catch a flight to Punta Arenas, the southernmost city on mainland Chile and the gateway to Patagonia.

On arrival, take a stroll around the historic city center and stop by the Nao Victoria Museum, where you can see full-scale replicas of famous ships like Magellan's. Don't forget to visit the Ovejero Monument, where a tradition exists to rub the toe of the statue for good luck.

You'll want to stock up on outdoor gear in Punta Arenas, as prices can be steep in the more remote areas of Torres del Paine, your next destination.

Where to stay in Punta Arenas

On the the 3rd of your 10 days in Chile, you'll be staying in Punta Arenas. Here are some great places to base yourself.

  • Centro Histórico: Stay close to historical landmarks, with easy access to local museums, shops, and restaurants.
  • Barrio Sur: This quiet residential area, just a short distance from the center, is perfect if you're looking for a more peaceful, local experience.
  • Barrio Norte: Home to the University of Magallanes, this neighborhood offers a mix of student energy and green spaces.
  • Barrio Croata: Known for its parks and strong community vibe, this charming area adds a personal touch to your stay.

Day 4: Day trip to Torres del Paine National Park

No visit to Patagonia is complete without seeing Torres del Paine National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that embodies the wild beauty of Patagonia. The park's iconic granite spires—the Torres (towers)—are a key part of the landscape, and is one of South America's most unforgettable views. This is one of many great parks in Chile.

Places to see

Begin your trek to Mirador Las Torres for one of the park's most renowned vistas. You'll want to start early (around 7 AM) to avoid the afternoon winds.
The Grey Glacier, part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, is an absolute must-see—a massive 4-mile-wide (6-kilometer) wall of ancient ice. Take a boat tour for an up-close look (be sure grab a seat on the left side for the best views). And don't let a cloudy morning stop you—the weather in Patagonia can change in an instant.

Day 5: Another day of exploring Torres del Paine

To me, one day in Torres del Paine just really isn't enough—there's so much to see and experience that a second day lets you slow down and take it all in. In fact, if you have more time, I would recommend adding more days to your Chile trip just to have more time here to tackle more trails. You could easily plan an Chile itinerary just coming here alone.

Places to see

A great option is hiking the French Valley, one of the most dramatic and beautiful spots in the park. The valley lies between the towering peaks of Paine Grande and Los Cuernos. It's a prime location to see hanging glaciers, rock spires, and vast expanses of wilderness. The winds can be strong in the valley, so make sure to pack a sturdy windproof jacket.

For amazing views of Lake Pehoe, make your way to the Lake Pehoe Viewpoint, where the waters are turquoise and reflect the Paine Massif. Early mornings are the best for lighting and calm waters. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, such as guanacos, Andean condors, and even pumas.

Day 6: Tour to Tierra del Fuego

Tierra del Fuego, or the "Land of Fire," got its name from the bonfires lit by Indigenous people along the coastline. This remote archipelago is packed with amazing wildlife, stunning scenery, and a fascinating history. It's one of the southernmost inhabited places on the planet, and being here really feels like you've reached the edge of the world.

Places to see

In Porvenir, visit the local museum to learn about the area's gold rush and the Selk'nam people, an Indigenous group with deep connections to this land.

From here, the must visit is King Penguin Park, home to the only king penguin colony outside Antarctica. For the best experience, visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the penguins are most active.

The ferry crossing can be a little rough, so if you're prone to seasickness, motion sickness pills are a good idea.

Day 7: Fly back to Santiago

After seeing so much in Patagonia, I recommend returning to Santiago to unwind and experience parts of the city you may have missed during your initial visit. This city is best seen over the course of several days.

Things to do in Santiago

Start by visiting the Lastarria neighborhood. It's known for its mix of boutique shops, independent galleries, and cafés. It's a great place to experience Santiago's artsy side. Afterward, you'll want to grab a traditional mote con huesillo—a sweet peach drink served with husked wheat—sold by vendors on the street. It's a refreshing and uniquely Chilean treat.

For a deeper dive into Chile's modern history, spend some time at the Museum of Memory and Human Rights, a moving experience that focuses on the country's recent past.

Day 8: Travel to San Pedro de Atacama

Travel time: 2-hour flight to Calama, then 1-hour drive to San Pedro de Atacama

For the next leg of your 10 day Chile itinerary, it's time to head to north Chile to San Pedro de Atacama, a small oasis town in the heart of the world's driest desert. Due to the high altitude (2,400 meters), take it easy upon arrival to help your body adjust to the thin air.

One of the best ways to start your visit is by sipping on coca tea, which can help alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness. Once you've acclimated, you can take a stroll around the Plaza de Armas, the town's main square. Sometimes gentle movement can help.

Where to stay in San Pedro de Atacama

Staying in San Pedro de Atacama is a highlight of this Chile itinerary for 10 days. Here are some places to think about staying.

  • Centro Histórico: Stay in the heart of town where you'll be close to shops, restaurants, and the town's central attractions. It's the most convenient option for first-time visitors.
  • Toconao: If you're looking for a quieter, more traditional experience, this village 24 miles (38 km) south offers a peaceful retreat with scenic views of the desert. This is my personal favorite.
  • Socaire: Located 61 miles (100 km) southeast of San Pedro, this village offers panoramic views of the Salar de Atacama and ancient agricultural terraces.
  • Ayllu de Solor: An Atacameño community near San Pedro, where you can learn about indigenous farming practices and gain insights into local culture.

Day 9: Visit the Moon Valley

Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) lives up to its name with its otherworldly landscape of salt caves, sand dunes, and jagged rock formations. NASA used this valley to test Mars rovers, and it's easy to see why—its lunar-like features when you're there make you really feel like you've landed on another planet.

Most tours take you to the Valle de la Luna in the late afternoon, just before sunset, when the light casts dramatic shadows across the desert.

After your visit, stick around for one of the best stargazing experiences in the world. Due to the high altitude, clear skies, and minimal light pollution, the Atacama Desert is renowned for its astronomical observations. Many local companies offer stargazing tours, complete with warm clothing and hot chocolate to keep you comfortable as you look at constellations, planets, and nebulae.

Day 10: Explore Atacama Salt Flats & Miscanti Lagoon

Your final day in the desert starts early with a visit to the Atacama Salt Flats, one of the largest salt flats in the world. The flats are home to large populations of flamingos that feed in the shallow waters. The best time to visit is in the early morning when the flamingos are most active.

Afterward, head to Miscanti Lagoon, located at 13,800 feet (4,200 meters)above sea level. This high-altitude lagoon is set against a stunning snow-capped volcanoes. The contrast of the deep blue waters with the stark white of the salt flats and the snow-capped peaks makes it one of the most picturesque spots in the region. Keep an eye out for vicuñas and Andean foxes as they roam the area.

Remember, the sun can be quite intense, so make sure to pack sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for your trip to the salt flats.

That sums up this Chile 10 day itinerary. If you have the time, I definitely recommend extending your trip to a 14 day Chile itinerary.
