Take a walking tour of undercover history
With the pleasant January weather perfect for walking tours, we suggest exploring Cartagena’s UNESCO-designated attractions in the company of a local guide. Given the heat, we suggest doing this early in the morning, or towards the end of the day.
The historic streets of the Old Town are stacked with colonial architecture, colorful houses, and lively plazas. Then there’s the iconic, imposing Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas — the most monumental fortress built by the Spaniards in any of their colonies.
Editor’s tip: time your tour to sip a sun-downer at Café del Mar — it's located on the city walls.
Explore Getsemaní at dusk
After a day on the beach — or adventuring — enjoy the cooler evenings exploring the vibrant neighbourhood of Getsemaní.
Known for its street art, music, and local restaurants and bars, while the area draws lots of tourists in the high season January, it never loses its local vibe.
Editor’s tip: head to Plaza de la Trinidad to see street performers do their thing.
Go volcano bathing
For something different, visit the Totumo mud volcano. Around 1 hour and 20 minutes from town, you’ll have no trouble getting here, with plenty of tours available.
On arrival, you climb into the crater to float in the warm, therapeutic mud baths. Believed to have healing properties, you’ll most likely come away with soft skin and a smile on your face.
