11. Oxford: the most romantic city break in the UK

When visitors think of Oxford, they almost always imagine its university, revered as one of the world’s great academic institutions, inhabiting honey-coloured stone buildings set around ivy-clad quadrangles. The image is accurate enough, but although the university dominates central Oxford both physically and spiritually, the wider city has an entirely different character.

Oxford should be high on anyone’s itinerary and can keep you occupied for several days. The colleges include some of England’s finest architecture, and the city also has some excellent museums and a good range of bars and restaurants.

12. Cardiff: best UK city for a rural escape

Home to some sixty per cent of the country’s population, the southeastern corner of Wales is one of Britain’s most industrialized regions. People and industry are most heavily concentrated around the seaports and former mining valleys, though quiet hills and beaches are only ever a few miles away.

Once the world’s busiest coal port, Cardiff is today the country’s commercial, cultural and political powerhouse, an upbeat capital offering stellar museums, a storybook castle and one of the best city breaks in the UK. Beyond Cardiff, Wales unfolds from the English border in a beguilingly rural manner.

The River Wye flows forth from its mouth at the fortress town of Chepstow, where you’ll find one of the most impressive castles in a land where few towns are without one. In the Wye’s beautiful valley lie the spectacularly placed ruins of Tintern Abbey, downstream from the old county town of Monmouth.

13. Manchester: the city of the industrial revolution

Manchester has had a global profile for more than 150 years, since the dawn of the industrial revolution. But today’s elegant core of converted warehouses and glass skyscrapers is a far cry from the smoke-covered sprawl George Orwell once described as “the belly and guts of the nation”.

Its renewed pre-eminence expresses itself in various ways, most swaggeringly in its football, as home to the world’s most famous and wealthiest clubs – Manchester United and Manchester City, respectively. But also in a thriving music scene that has given birth to world-beaters as diverse as the Hallé Orchestra and Oasis.

Moreover, the city’s celebrated concert halls, theatres, clubs and cafés feed off the cosmopolitan drive provided by the country’s largest student population outside London and a high-profile LGBTQ+ community.

14. Glasgow: best UK city for Victorian architecture

Rejuvenated, upbeat Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, changed irrevocably in 1990 when it energetically embraced its status as a European City of Culture. Set on the banks of the mighty River Clyde, this former industrial giant can seem less than enticing as you approach, and many of its outer suburbs remain seriously deprived.

However, after a little time exploring, visitors will find a city that is, in its own idiosyncratic way, a cultured and dynamic place well worth getting to know. Glasgow has much to offer for your best city breaks in the UK, including some of the most imaginative museums and galleries in Britain – among them the voluminous Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and the Zaha Hadid-designed Riverside Museum – nearly all of which are free.

Glasgow’s architecture is some of the most striking in the UK, from the restored eighteenth-century warehouses of the Merchant City to the hulking Victorian prosperity of George Square. To summarise, Glasgow, with its variety of activities, is suitable for all types of travel, whether travelling alone or with the whole family.

15. Leeds: ideal location for shopping

Yorkshire’s commercial capital, and one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, Leeds has undergone a radical transformation in recent years. There’s still a true northern grit to its character, but any trace of grime has been removed from the impressive Victorian buildings, and the city is revelling in its new persona as a booming financial, commercial and cultural centre.

The renowned shops, restaurants, bars and clubs provide one focus of a visit to contemporary Leeds – it’s certainly one of the best city breaks in the UK for conspicuous consumption and indulgence. Museums include the impressive Royal Armouries, while the City Art Gallery has one of the best collections of British twentieth-century art outside London.
