2. Listen to Cuban son musicians

Buena Vista Social Club-style son clubs are prolific in Santo Domingo. Cuban son is a popular style of music that originated in eastern Cuba in the early 20th century. It is a fusion of Spanish and African rhythms and is characterized by its use of the guitar, percussion, and vocals.

The waterfall is located within the El Limón National Park, which covers an area of approximately 8,000 hectares and is home to a variety of plants and animals, including many species of birds, reptiles, and mammals.

4. Walk in Constanza valley

A circular Shangri-la valley set deep in the heart of the Caribbean’s tallest mountains. There are several attractions in the Constanza Valley that are worth visiting, including the town of Constanza itself, which has a number of historic buildings and landmarks.

5. Surfing at Cabarete beaches - one of the best things to do in the Dominican Republic

6. Party at Santo Domingo Malecón

A scenic, 10km-long outdoor boardwalk and party zone dotted with music-blaring discos and bustling bars and cafés. The Malecón is a popular waterfront promenade in Santo Domingo, the capital city of the Dominican Republic. It stretches along the Caribbean Sea for several kilometres and is a popular destination for both locals and tourists.

7. Buy some amber souvenirs

The Dominican Republic has a professional baseball league, the Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana (LIDOM), which consists of six teams that compete against each other in a regular season and playoffs.

9. Experience local nature at Lago Enriquillo

A saltwater lake the size of Manhattan, populated by crocodiles, rhinoceros, iguanas and tens of thousands of colourful tropical birds. It is the largest lake in the Caribbean and is known for its unique characteristics, including its high salt content, which makes it inhospitable to most aquatic life.

One of the main attractions of Lago Enriquillo is the opportunity to observe and photograph the crocodiles that live in the lake. There are several tour operators that offer boat tours of the lake, which allow visitors to get a close-up view of the crocodiles and other wildlife.

10. Visit Museo del Hombre Dominicano in Santo Domingo

This impressive museum, one of four in Santo Domingo’s Plaza de la Cultura, houses an outstanding collection of Taino artefacts, plus exhibits on the island’s African heritage.

Some of the main exhibits at the Museo del Hombre Dominicano include a collection of indigenous Taíno artifacts, including pottery, tools, and jewellery. It also exhibits on the history of the Afro-Caribbean population in the Dominican Republic, including their contributions to music and other cultural traditions. The museum also has a number of temporary exhibits that focus on specific themes or events in the country's history.

11. Take part in La Vega Carnival

Each February, La Vega transforms itself with the biggest, wildest party in this Carnival-crazed nation. The La Vega Carnival is an annual celebration held in La Vega. It is one of the largest and most popular carnivals in the country, attracting thousands of visitors from all over the world.

12. Have a merengue dance lesson

The stuttering, fast-paced national music has been around in various forms for the past three hundred years. Merengue is a type of dance and music that originated in the Dominican Republic. La Zona Colonial, also known as the Colonial Zone or Ciudad Colonial, is a historic neighbourhood located in the capital city of Santo Domingo. 14. Whale watching - one of the essential things to do in the Dominican Republic

One of the world’s great natural spectacles takes place every winter in Samaná bay when thousands of humpback whales arrive to breed, give birth and fill the memory cards of the watching tourists’ cameras. The Dominican Republic is home to a variety of whale species, including humpback whales, which migrate to the area between January and March to breed and give birth.
