But with over 1,200 miles of coastline and a landscape that ranges from pristine beaches to craggy mountains, choosing where to stay isn't an easy task. From the glamorous Costa Smeralda in the northeast to the historic capital of Cagliari in the south,  here's our guide to the best area to stay in Sardinia.

Check out the Roman Amphitheater and the Basilica of San Saturnino to get a feel for the city's ancient roots, while the bustling Marina district offers a modern Mediterranean vibe.

The city comes alive in the evenings when locals and visitors alike enjoy the passeggiata, strolling along the tree-lined Via Roma or the charming streets of the Stampace and Villanova neighbourhoods.

Don’t miss the Mercato di San Benedetto, one of Europe’s largest covered markets, where you can taste local produce and seafood.

For a peaceful retreat, take a stroll in the Public Gardens, or spend an afternoon at Poetto Beach, a long stretch of golden sand perfect for sunbathing and water sports.
